Wyatt is four years old! Yesterday, we celebrated Wyatt's birthday in Chile and the first one he's ever had in the summer! It was a frosty 90 degrees yesterday in Santiago, and Wyatt didn't understand why it was weird to be in shorts in December. We started the day with opening a few gifts from Grandma and Grandpa, Aunt Lori and her crew, and Nana and Grandaddy. Wyatt has watched the mail patiently these last few weeks as boxes have arrived with his name on them.
Money, books, movies, action figures, and dress-up clothes! What could be better?
While we prepared for the party, Wyatt hung out in the back yard and took cat naps with Hoolie.
Wyatt didn't get into the cupcake action this year, but Greta helped Paul make the goodies, as always.
Much in the vein of Wyatt's Halloween costume - the "tiger vampire bat" - Wyatt told me that he wanted a "Superhero Eagle" birthday party. We invited five of his little buddies and asked them to dress up in their favorite superhero costume. Wyatt decided to dress up as an eagle. You have no idea how hard that was to figure out in Santiago. I was convinced that I would need to learn how to sew on the fly until my friend Kelly told me about this amazing street downtown where they sell costumes and party supplies all year round. When all the little kids arrived in their superhero costumes, Wyatt met them as a "black eagle."
Show time!
The real "eagle" part of the party began, however, when our new friend, Julian, arrived. Julian is a senior at Nido and he began a love of falconry when he was only twelve years old. With his mom joining him as his assistant, Julian brought his Harris Hawk to Wyatt's party, and each child go to learn so much!
First Julian told the children all about falconry, including the history of the tradition. He showed them photos, passed around some neat gadgets, and finally, he brought out his bird. The children had to be very quiet the whole time so that the bird wouldn't get scared.
Wyatt was the first one to hold her!
Then each child, and most of the adults, waited in line to get to hold her.

Even two-year old Anna Leigh!
Hoolie had to wait upstairs in our bedroom while all of this was going on. Once the hood was taken off the bird, we had to move Hoolie even further back into the house and close the windows because the hawk kept looking up at our bedroom window and refusing to fly. Once we got rid of Hoolie, though, she did great!

After Julian and his Harris Hawk left the party, we had cupcakes and ice cream.
Happy birthday, beautiful boy! We love you!
I tried so hard to persuade Wyatt to pose with me for a photo, but to no avail. I decided to snack on his neck in retaliation.
Later, we opened the birthday presents and skyped with both sets of grandparents and with Aunt Lori.
Finally, at a whopping eight o'clock at night, Wyatt got his final present: a pedal bike! He's been a rock star on the glider bike for almost two years, and he has been begging for a "real" bike, lately.
We love you, sweet Wyatt. Happy birthday!
