Instruments

Since Greta was born, I have listened to the classical music station in the car on our way to school each morning. And now Wyatt gets to listen to classical music, too. Periodically, our friends, Carey and Lisa, have invited us to hear them perform in the community orchestra and band in which each of them participate. Because of this, I've always picked out the trumpet and violin parts in each piece on the radio so that Greta and Wyatt can learn to identify each instrument. Greta has begun to ask for the names of every instrument she hears, and I am only good for the major ones. I get fuzzy on french horns versus trumpets and oboes versus clarinets, but I think she is learning the major sounds and is starting to be able to identify them herself. The interesting and happy part to me is that Greta prefers classical music to other pop or rock songs. Almost every morning, if I forget to turn on the music, Greta says, "Turn on the radio, mama - I want to hear the instruments." And as we cruise along on our way to school, she says, "What is the name of this instrument, Mom?" Once, a long while ago, I was listening to some stupid Beyonce or the like, and Greta said, "Can we hear the trumpets instead? I don't like this." I love it when a plan comes together! Now if we could just find a good trumpet instructor. . . . Carey? Carey? :)
